RYDDE Youth Celebrate Growth and Connection at Annual Showcase

On March 1, the Fetzer Center was filled with the vibrant sounds of drumming and the energy of traditional african dance as the Rootead Youth Drum and Dance Ensemble (RYDDE) presented its annual showcase, Rootead in Rhythm.

The showcase served as a celebration of the youth’s artistry, discipline, and cultural connection.

“The community responded exceptionally well to this showcase,” said Adia Brown, Marketing Lead for Rootead. “The event felt like a Rootead intimate gathering, very family focused, which allowed our youth to truly shine in front of those who support them most.”

This year’s event drew in nearly 90 attendees creating an intimate family-focused performance full of youth attendees and families. RYDDE members were excited to connect with their communities and show them what they have been working on.

“The most rewarding part was dancing for my friends,” said one RYDDE participant. “I felt very good about the performance. It was fun and my friends and family loved it.”

The performance was a culmination of months of hard work and dedication from the RYDDE participants. This was reflected on stage beyond technical skill, as the participants displayed the growth, confidence and friendship that was developed through their intensive preparations.

The true depth of this connection was seen during dress rehearsals. Initially the group left practice feeling anxious about the improvements needed before the Sunday performance. Rather than crumbling under pressure, staff witnessed senior members lifting up rookie performers, while dancers challenged one another to bring their highest energy and focus to the stage.

Building on the success of the March showcase, RYDDE members are already looking forward to sharing their passions with the broader Kalamazoo County community at the upcoming Juneteenth festival and other community based events throughout 2026.
